by StewartRoss (Author)

Synopsis

This book is taken from a series that examines the major historical topics through a mixture of narrative and analysis of the key issues involved. Each book is designed to introduce the reader to a wide range of contemporary sources and aims to encourage readers in the handling and assessment of original historical material. It examines the years leading up to 1939, and asks whether the people had been justified in their optimism for the future after World War I. It looks at domestic politics, the economy and the contrasts of depression and prosperity. It examines the changing attitudes of the times - the growth of trade unionism and the strike, woman's rights and increasing education for all. The book ends with an examination of the years immediately prior to the World War II, and explains why Chamberlain's attempts at appeasement were doomed to failure. The author has written several other book for Waylnd, including The Russian Revolution , The Origins of the First World War , China since 1945 and Towards European Unity in the Witness History series, and many books in the Spotlight on History series.
