by Mike Atkinson (Illustrator), D . Bown (Author)
This series introduces young children to various habitats, both in close-up and in the wider context of the seasons and lifes cycles. Each book focuses on easily observable features that children can see for themselves and suggests seasonal activities that will enable them to make direct contact with the habitat or its associated plants and animals. Simple captions in large type have been added for the benefit of younger or less able readers. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into four chapters - one for each season. It shows the many plants and animals to be found in fields and hedgerows and the special things to look out for at different times of the year. Each illustration is accompanied by an easy-reader caption as well as more advanced text. At the end of the chapter there are suggested activites, which include ageing a hedgerow, pressing flowers, making a flora of a hedgerow, collecting and identifying autumn seeds and fruits, and visiting a hedge-laying competition.
