  This activity-based series promotes an investigative approach to history by encouraging children to explore the past through what they see or find out from their surroundings. The narrative is interspersed with activities and the reader is told how to gather informtion and use it in a positive and constructive manner. This volume examines the way houses and homes have developed in response to the changing needs of British society. Beginning with the way houses have developed since the beginning of this century, the author goes on to look at homes from the Stone Age to the present, including Roman and Saxon homes, life in a medieval manor and the homes of rich and poor in Tudor and Elizabethan times. An activity section is included in each chapter to encourage the reader to observe and research into the historical potential of his local environment.
