Synopsis

This series aims to help teenagers make up their minds on some of the most controversial issues facing people around the world today. The arguments on all sides of each issue are illustrated using quotations taken from a variety of different sources: government statistics, independent experts, public figures and people with personal experience of the subject being treated. The readers are guided through the various arguments by a running narrative that introduces the quotations and their sources and puts them into context. In the following chapters the author has selected extracts concerning the social and legal controversy surrounding drugs - both those which are legally available and those that are banned: alcohol, tobacco, solvents, cannabis, cocaine and heroin. Issues the reader is asked to consider include: how addictive is cannabis? It raises a lot of questions over drug use, introducing the reader to the wide variety of problems relating to drugs and to the measures that are being put formard to solve them.
