Synopsis

The Let's Look At series is designed to encourage children to learn about the world around them. This book introduces the young reader to many different kinds of ships and boats all around the world. The text describes the variety of tasks performed by different boats. The author looks at the development of boats over the centuries, from Roman galleys, through sailing ships and steamships to the large liners and merchant ships of today. The text also discusses different types of modern boats: cargo vessels, fishing boats, lifeboats, warships, cruise liners and special ships such as icebreakers. Boats on inshore waters, such as canal barges and pleasure boats, are also mentioned. The author concludes by describing some of the world's more exotic boats - junks, South Pacific outriggers and record-breaking oil tankers. Rupert Matthews has written several books for Wayland, including Castles , in the Let's Look At series.
