This book is part of the Life Cycles series, a collection of books intended as first natural history books for children. Each book takes a familiar plant or animal and traces its life cycle from conception to adulthood, explaining and illustrating each stage of its development. The series is designed with two levels of text: large type captioning the artwork for younger readers and more detailed text for older children. There are suggestions for simple methods of keeping or investigating the animal or plant. In this book the author provides an introduction to the sweet chestnut tree. He considers pollination, fertilization, the growth of the fruit and the dispersal of the seeds. He concludes with the growth of the new tree and thus completes the cycle. Williams is a primary science adviser and has written other books in this series.
