This series aims to arouse children's curiosity in their immediate environment, by using narrative interspersed with questions that help children interpret what they see around them. The books are designed for primary school project work in particular, but can also be used by children on their own. In this book, the author aims to encourage children to find out about what goes on in their local shops. Children are encouraged to think about the advantages and functions of the different shops and are introduced to the many different kinds ranging from market stalls and corner shops to superstores and shopping centres, as well as specialist shops such as mobile shops, take-aways, delicatessens and charity shops. There is a warning included, advising children never to go to the shops without first asking parents' permission and never to talk to strangers.
