Synopsis

As part of the Food series this book, aimed at young readers, is an illustrated introduction to eggs and their place in our lives. It explains the different types of eggs eaten by people all over the world with particular concentration on hens' eggs. The author tells the history of eggs, how people first domesticated the wild jungle fowl in India which lead, over succeeding centuries, to the exportion of chickens to the rest of the world. The nutritional aspects of eggs are discussed, and the various methods of egg farming and how they arrive in the shops are described. There is also a section on the different beliefs associated with eggs and some simple experiments, such as decorating eggs. The book concludes with some easy recipes which have step-by-step illustrations. The text is accompanied by a glossary, a further reading list and an index. Dorothy Turner has written various books in Wayland's Great lives series and is author of Bread in the Food series.
