The Cinema (Media S.)

by Andrew (Author), Higson (Author)

Synopsis

This illustrated series aims to encourage a critical awareness of the impact and power of the mass media. Each title examines the changing role of the media in society, the ways in which media texts are constructed and interpreted, the technical and theoretical terminology of the subject and the financial structures behind the medium. In this volume, the author gives an account of the past, present and future of the cinema. He begins by looking at the history of the cinema and the major changes that have taken place in the industry since the invention of the cinema in the 1890s. This is followed by an examination of how the film industry works today, looking at the passage of a film from conception to exhibition. Some of the main marketing strategies used by the film industry, such as stars and genres (and sequels and re-makes) are also discussed plus why watching films is so popular and the relation between story-telling and spectacle. In conclusion, the author speculates on how the cinema might develop in the future. Andrew Higson has contributed to various media journals and books, and is on the editorial board of Screen .
