The author's material is drawn from and inspired by the works of her great grand-mother, a 19th-century Yorkshire wisewoman who used her fund of native wisdom to help others. The spells, reproduced here for the first time in their original form, represent a fascinating element of folklore tradition and offer a glimpse of a time long ago when country people lived close to the earth and observed the laws of nature. Some of the spells are complex and require careful preparation, others merely demand careful observation of natural symbols.
