Period Gardens

Period Gardens

by Patrick Taylor (Author), Eric Crichton (Photographer)

Synopsis

Background information to a successful and authentic restoration. It gives a guide to the distinctive styles of lay-out, planting and ornament from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. It shows the importance of interpreting vital clues to the past history of a garden. It provides advice on seeking financial help and expert advice for the restoration of a period garden. The heart of the book is a series of case-histories of ten individual restorations ranging in period from the early 17th century to the early 20th century. They include knot gardens, parterres, landscape gardens, borders and virtually every garden feature of the period covered. This history of the garden is given and in each case those responsible for the restoration have been interviewed. Their experience of planning and executing the work provides the detailed practical information that lies at the heart of the book. The results of the restoration described in this book are shown in specially commissioned colour photographs displaying the gardens in their newly revealed splendour. Finely drawn garden plans accompany each chapter, giving the reader a bird's eye view of the overall garden design. Apart from providing a practical guide to restoration and a detailed account of changing period styles, this book will serve as an inspiration to all garden owners. Although all the gardens chosen as examples are large, the principles and methods described apply to gardens of any size.
