Synopsis

This guide follows the story of IndyCar racing. The book includes information on the 16 circuits, the competition rules and the racing conditions. In addition, the vehicles are examined with technical data on their construction and capabilities. There are also driver and team profiles. The introduction details the origins and history of the sport since early this century through to today's 200mph machines. The story features the chief men in the sport, the sponsor, media coverage and the race tracks. The section on competition rules gives the construction and safety regulations, plus details of how cars qualify and the racing conditions they are likely to meet on the track. "Indy cars - nuts and bolts" describes the three IndyCar chassis types - Penske, Lola and Reynard - and how they have performed. It also at the engines - the Ford-Cosworth, Ilmor and Honda for IndyCar racing with the addition of the Mercedes-Benz and Menard for the Indy 500 series. Technical details include the tyres, aerodynamics, the telemetry plus how much it costs to run one of these machines. The timing and pit stops are then examined - the time keeping and how accuracy is achieved. Detail includes how pit stops work and just how long it takes for cars to change wheels and refuel. "Indy lights" shows where the IndyCar stars of tomorrow are to be found. The chapter profiles drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Paul Tracy, A. J. Foyt, Eddie Cheever, and Mario Andretti.
