  Heritage Unlocked is a new English Heritage series which aims to encourage visitors to explore some of our lesser-known sites. Each book covers one region of England, and will include features on the region's history, culture and character, as well as a concise but informative entry on each site, all fully illustrated in colour. This book describes the essential features of English Heritage free sites in Dorset, Devon and Somerset. The sites themselves are often set in magnificent, scenic countryside and range in date from the Neolithic to early modern times. They include Bronze Age burial mounds, chambered tombs and stone alignments, Iron Age settlement huts and hillforts such as the huge Maiden Castle, the foundations of a Roman temple, medieval village ruins and Norman stone keeps, a Civil war memorial, and a 17th-century market hall.
