Stokesay Castle

Stokesay Castle

by Munby (Author), Summerson (Author)

Synopsis

Stokesay Castle in Shropshire is an amazingly well preserved example of a fortified manor house dating back most likely to the late 13th century. Built by Lawrence of Ludlow, the leading wool merchant in the area, the house has been little altered since the late 13th century and was the subject of a major restoration project by English Heritage in the 1980s. This guidebook to Stokesay Castle includes a tour of the exterior and interior of the castle, and discusses the history of its owners. The book also includes a short, two page tour and description of Clun Castle, 12 miles from Ludlow, probably built in the late 11th century.
