On 6th May 1915, Henry Friston, a 21-year-old seaman, rejoined his battleship after ten days in Hell. Hell was just 180 metres long and seven metres wide and was otherwise known only as 'X Beach', Gallipoli. Henry, ferrying the wounded from the battlefield, had not eaten or slept for three days. Then, somehow, in the midst of the bombardments, he met an unlikely companion - a tortoise. This is a charming tale based on true events. A junior reporter for a local paper in the 1950's meets Henry Friston who has a tortoise called Ali Pasha. It turns out that Henry was a sailor in the First World War and rescued the tortoise on the beaches of Gallipoli. Against regulations he kept it on his ship and smuggled it home to England. It's an interesting human story that also gives a portrait of the role of the Royal Navy in the first part of the war. Henry's ship HMS Implacable was involved in the bombardment of the German army on the Belgian coast, the Gallipoli landings and the defence of the Suez Canal. Though this is largely a 'feel good' book, Michael Foreman does not spare his readers the details of the sufferings of the casualties at Gallipoli. Michael Foreman is one of the UK's pre-eminent children's illustrators. A Kate Greenaway Medal-shortlisted author he has illustrated many best-selling books for children, including War Boy and War Game.
