Student Workbook for 'Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers'

by Dr Derek W Haylock (Author), RalphManning (Author)

Synopsis

This Workbook provides students with an attractive and engaging means of reviewing, reinforcing and applying the material of Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers Fourth Edition, chapter by chapter. The material in the workbook has been tested and endorsed by primary PGCE trainees. Detailed solutions and explanatory notes are provided at the end of the book for each task.

The self-assessment tasks are of three kinds:

- Checking Understanding

Tasks designed to help the reader to check their own understanding of key concepts and principles and their mastery of important skills in each chapter.

- Processes and Applications

Tasks that provide opportunities to apply the mathematical content of each chapter in real-life situations, and in puzzles, problems, investigations and other mathematical challenges.

- Teaching and Learning:

tasks that provide opportunities for the reader to consider their responses to children's errors and misunderstandings, and to consider the content of each chapter in terms of approaches to teaching and learning in a primary school context.

Media Reviews
Comments from student reviewers:

'A good range of tasks, covering a variety of elements within the topic. I found the tasks that showed application in a classroom environment particularly useful'

'I found the exercises helpful, as the more practice I get thinking about and applying the different methods, the more confident I feel explaining them to others'

'The Teaching and Learning tasks were especially useful and really made me think about what constitutes a good maths lesson as well as giving me some good ideas'

'Overall I thought that the tasks were helpful in confirming understanding of the chapter. The processes and applications tasks were useful. I found the teaching and learning tasks very useful and thought provoking - I wanted to do more!'

'I think the inclusion of interpreting children's errors and misconceptions in the teaching and learning of mental strategies section will be very beneficial for student teachers to prepare us for the classroom. Having to work out the pupil's errors and misunderstandings then provide an explanation was really useful. I could see how I could implement this in the classroom'

'For me the Teaching and Learning tasks were definitely the most useful since they highlight real situations that could arise and helped me as an inexperienced teacher to reflect on ways of tackling children's difficulties with the subject. They also provide good inspiration for activities that could be used in teaching'

'Really great! A broad range of tasks, very creative and clearly helped my further learning. All the questions about teachers' approaches and children's problems were brilliant for helping me in my future teaching'

'The most helpful questions were those that made me apply the knowledge in the chapter to a real teaching situation. These really tested my understanding of what I had read in the chapter in a practical way that I could see would be highly relevant to the classroom'

'Thought-provoking tasks that made me reflect and challenged my understanding'

'Overall, I found the tasks helpful as they highlighted my weaknesses in various areas of mathematics. Also, I found it good to be able to link the material with the classroom'
