Media Reviews
Eleven-year-old Ellis lives with his father in Newport, south Wales, his mother having died when he was small. Ellis is a boy who deals in facts; he doesnt see the point in using elaborate language to describe ordinary things, much to the despair of his English teacher! Then, one day, a professional story-teller visits the school and changes Ellis whole outlook on life. With Jay, his creative friend, Ellis is transported into the world of fairy tales, and they encounter challenges requiring both practical but mostly imaginative skills in order to survive. In Phantasmagoria there are dragons, dwarves, pigs, wolves, a witc, and a damsel in distress who all inhabit a magical land of forest, volcanic mountains, tree houses, an eerie castle, etc. The fast-paced, lively adventure uses sophisticated vocabulary to stretch the average readers understanding, and the narrative is full of dramatic events to fire the imagination. In the final chapter, the worlds of scientific fact and creative fiction are shown to have blurred edges, as described by famous scientists in their published works, including Elliss hero, Albert Einstein. By the end of the story there is also a closer relationship between father and son as they continue to deal with their grief and loss. This reader is left seeking to find out about the pineal gland ... do read the story to discover more!
