Media Reviews
If you are interested in the First and Second World Wars and in Wales and its people and are aged nine or over, here is everything you wanted to know and much that you possibly didnt! Woeful Wales at War is full of interesting information, nasty nuggets of knowledge and true stories which help make events and experiences real to those living in the twenty-first century, and is presented in a lively illustrated format which both youngsters and adults will appreciate and learn from. This is no dry history text: this is a well-researched book with solid data and quirky facts presented in inventive ways and guaranteed to impress friends and flummox teachers ! Catrin Stevens knows exactly the kinds of details which her readers will find interesting fighting and killing, bombing and burning, gassing and ghastliness but also accidents and adventures, heroes and prisoners, people and pets. The apt, uncluttered style is varied according to the content, from narrative to bullet points and speech bubbles to menus, timelines, posters and personal letters. The author keeps the reader engaged with funny or gruesome asides and pointers, alliteration and wordplay which are entertaining in themselves whilst far from ignoring the thought-provoking grim realities. Not only do the graphics by Graham Howells break up the text, they enrich by smoothly filling in gaps, providing jokes or commentary etc. The visual aspects more than complement the writing, showing artist and author working in partnership in producing a book whose layout, short sections and various quiz book features, use of different typefaces and so on make it ideal for home or classroom. Dip into Woeful Wales at War or read it from cover to cover, enjoy the quips and quizzes and appreciate the plentiful pictures. And whether youre nine or ninety youre learning without realising that you are! This is a book not to be missed. M.
