A Guide to Living with Hypermobility Syndrome: Bending without Breaking

A Guide to Living with Hypermobility Syndrome: Bending without Breaking

by IsobelKnight (Author)

Synopsis

People with Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS), including Ehlers-Danlos type Hypermobility Syndrome, have a larger range of joint movement than is typical, which can cause pain and fatigue despite an outward appearance of good health. This book is the complete guide to living with and managing HMS, and ultimately enjoying a fulfilling life. The book covers everything from recognising symptoms and obtaining initial diagnosis to living with the condition on a daily basis and managing its negative effects. The author, who has HMS herself, looks at how the condition affects children and adolescents, before moving on to explore pain management (including the use of physiotherapy, pilates and a selected range of complementary health therapies), pregnancy, physical and psychological aspects of the condition, and how it widely affects dancers and other performance artists. Wider conditions that encompass Hypermobility Syndrome are also touched upon, including Fibromyalgia and IBS. This book will be a must for anybody who suffers, or suspects they might be suffering from, Hypermobility Syndrome. It will also be of interest to their families and friends, and professionals working with the condition.

Media Reviews
This book has given me more ideas of how to work with hypermobile people plus a much greater appreciation of the difficulties faced... I would highly recommend this book for anyone with hypermobility and for bodyworkers working with those with hypermobility. -- Pilates with Julia blog
(...) compulsory reading for anyone who might have Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS), for those who know someone with HMS or anyone who teaches dance to sufferers of HMS... I think this is another book that should be on every dance teacher's bookcase. -- Dancing Times
This is a must read book for all people who have one of the Hypermobility Syndromes, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome... The one thing this book has to offer above all other books on Hypermobility Syndromes is validation . For perhaps the first time people with HMS will feel validated with regards to not just having a poorly recognised condition but also its effects on their daily life. It is hoped that from this validation that people will then be able to make the positive steps forward in managing their condition, improving their quality of life and gaining confidence in working with medical professionals. Isobel should be applauded for biting the bullet and bringing the subject to the forefront. -- Hypermobility Syndrome Association
The Hypermobility Syndrome Association (HMSA) welcomes this book which is written from the experiences and reflections of the author who has Hypermobility Syndrome (also known as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome- Hypermobility type)... It offers an in depth account of the many difficulties that our members face each day; including the the lack of medical recognition and understanding of what is now being seen by researchers and experts as a very complex condition. Hypermobility Syndrome is not just about laxity of joints! It is a multi-systemic condition which has not just a physical impact on a person's life but also a psychological, economic and social impact. This book reflects all of this and more. -- Donna Wicks, HMSA Senior Medical Liaison Officer, UK
What Isobel Knight brings to the literature [on Hypermobility Syndrome] is something appealing and unique... This is a book for anyone who wants to understand the personal impact of Hypermobility Syndrome, as much as its clinical presentation and management without all the medical jargon. -- from the foreword by Dr Alan J Hakim, Consultant Rheumatologist and Acute Physician, Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust, London UK
