Man with a Mission

Man with a Mission

by JohnTaylor (Author)

Synopsis

This is the autobiography of a much loved clergyman and missionary. The ministry of Canon John Taylor has seen him working in the Welsh valleys, in busy ports in Africa and Hong Kong, and in the colourful city of Bangkok. His aim has always been the same: to show others the humane and practical ministry of the church, and he began this service as a lay assistant with the Missions to Seafarers in Cardiff. Learning how he could help seamen in their brief sojourns in port as well as the loved ones of those far away at sea was a fundamental stepping stone on his way to ordination and the life of a missionary. Canon John Taylor's stories of his career are shot through with humour and determination, and above all display his belief in a ministry with a practical message of love and help for all God's children.

Author Bio
John Taylor embarked on a career in civil engineering, but soon felt that God was calling him to become a minister. He became a lay assistant with the Missions to Seamen, firstly in Cardiff, then London, where he met his wife, Rose. Their first overseas posting was in Hong Kong in the 1950s, followed by a period back in the UK while John studied for ordination. He served as curate in two Welsh parishes before returning to the Missions to Seamen, as chaplain in Dar es Salaam. While there he became Archdeacon and Vicar General, and on leaving was made a Canon Emeritus. His final overseas posting was in Bangkok, where he worked with prisoners, refugees and war veterans, as well as the expatriate community. He was awarded the OBE for his work in Tanzania. Canon John is now retired and still living in the rectory of Streat and Westmeston, where he was priest in charge.
