Author Bio
David Bass, M.Med (Surg) (UCT), FCS (SA) trained as a general surgeon in Cape Town and in the UK. Special interests in children, emergency medicine and injury prevention led to his appointments in 1987 as senior surgeon and head of the paediatric trauma service at Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, and Director of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa in 1992. He was a founder member of the child abuse management service at Red Cross Children's Hospital. Dr Bass obtained his instructor's card in Advanced Trauma Life Support and was the first South African to be certified in the UK as an instructor in Advanced Paediatric Life Support. He has published widely on a variety of medical subjects, including children's injuries and injury prevention. Dr Bass currently works as a full-time medico-legal advisor. He lives in Cape Town. Maurice Kibel is Emeritus Professor of Child Health at the University of Cape Town. He was a consultant paediatrician in Zimbabwe and the USA for many years before setting up the Child Health Unit at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town, in 1979. He is the author of over 120 publications.
