Media Reviews
The stories are wonderfully told: simple, clear language that stays on course... and of course the illustrations are so enduringly distinctive, with Pugwash of the late Pavarotti-like proportions. Book Magazine
Author Bio
JOHN RYAN was born in Edinburgh, but his lifelong fascination with ships and sailing began when his family moved to Morocco. From his bedroom window in the exotic fishing port of Rabat, he scanned the rolling seas to catch a glimpse of a real pirate ship. He was educated in England and then spent the Second World War fighting in Burma. When he returned to Britain, he met and married his wife Priscilla and worked for a number of years as Assistant Art Master at Harrow School, before beginning his new career as a children's book writer and illustrator, and producer of the Pugwash television programmes.
