Mosaics: Practical Projects for the Home

by HelenBaird (Author)

Synopsis

With innovative projects and beautiful photography, this book enables beginners to learn the craft of mosaic quickly and easily and to design and make their own interior projects with style and confidence. The principles of mosaic making are easy to master and this book gives you all the practical advice on the basic techniques, materials, and equipment, including concise information on the adhesives and tools required. One thing is sure - the materials you use will be both cheap and easy to find, and that is one of the beauties of this ancient craft. Traditional mosaic materials such as marble, vitreous glass and smalti can be supplemented with everyday items such as broken crockery, kitchen and bathroom tiles, pebbles and mirrored glass and this versatility, together with the hardwearing and decorative qualities of the materials, will enhance any interior. The heart of the book is over 25 exciting projects to make, graded by level of difficulty, including a shimmering stained glass candle-holder and screen, gold vitreous glass mirrors, an elegant spiral vase drawing on classical inspiration, a stunning three-dimensional sculptural head and a striking contemporary wavy glass table. The time each project takes to complete varies between a few hours, to a day or over a weekend and details the list of tools needed, materials, comprehensive instructions, photographs and templates where required. Creating your own mosaics will add colour and individuality to any living space, from transforming a bathroom to enlivening a tired kitchen. This ancient craft is brought to life by this book for the modern age as a stylish and fun decorating medium which is easy to do, cheap, satisfying and highly enjoyable.
