If you enjoy tackling smaller projects such as tote bags, wall hangings, pillows and other home and personal accessories then this book offers you 130 gorgeous little blocks to stimulate your imagination.-Fabrications The premise of this book is to use 3 -5 (7.5-12.5 cm) blocks for quilts, homewares and accessories. It is aimed at the quilter who wants to use little blocks to make smaller sized projects and their size enables you to use scraps or jelly rolls of co-ordinating fabric in order to be more economical with your purchases. The appeal in this book is its clear and bright layout. The first part of the book is given over to explanatory details (how to piece, applique, finish and quilt) and also some simple project ideas. Then the main body of the book focuses on the 'Block Directory'. It is divided into themed chapters - 'Almost Amish', 'Stars and Pinwheels' and 'Thrifty Thirties', for example. Each section is colour-coded for easy recognition. The quilt blocks are illustrated in brightly coloured and varied fabrics, which gives it a modern look, and there are some designs in there that would appeal to the quilter who wants their traditional quilting techniques to look up-todate. I think you would need some experience with piecing to start with, as the instructions and diagrams for each block are limited to a short explanation, with a single diagram showing you basically how the piece fits together. But its modern take on the traditional patterns through colour and fabric choices make this a very interesting book and will certainly give inspiration for a new look.-Workshop on the Web

Susan Briscoe is a textile designer, author and teacher, specializing in sashiko and Japanese textile design. After graduating in visual art and design, Susan worked as an English teacher in Japan, where she also studied the tea ceremony, traditional textiles, and kimono design and tailoring. Susan has created design kits for Japanese patchwork fabrics, published textile projects in books and magazines, and demonstrates her work at quilt and textile shows.
