The super deformed illustration style exaggerates a character's features, usually resulting in gigantic heads. Although it is widely used by manga fans because it is easy to reproduce, learning to control it can be difficult. This book is aimed at all those who would like to start or to perfect this style. Centred around the tiny and fun chibis, this volume explains, step by step, how to start from scratch and arrive at the final finished product.

(Reviewed with `Gothic Lolitas')
I find the world of Manga difficult to warm to - I can appreciate the technical abilities in creating a world of fantasy figures, but cannot understand the huge phenomenon they have become. Not so my grandchildren who seize upon new books with glee and devour the contents. These two books were immediately grabbed by Beth who is 9 and Nathan who is 6 - they simply were transfixed by the Chibis and spent reams of paper copying the steps and creating and colouring their own chibis. I think the Lolitas may appeal more to a slightly older age groups as well as the young adults that adore the whole manga genre. Both these books carry simple easy to understand instructions for beginning the figures and follow up with plentiful advice on shading and colouring to make realistic ( if you can say that about fantasy figures!) and believable characters.
If you've friends of family interested in Manga these books will be a super addition to their collection and if like me you've young grandchildren the Chibis will give you a peaceful time while they devise their own characters and give them an enjoyable introduction to how creating their own art is so satisfying and enjoyable.
