There is little, if any, lasting element of civilised culture which survives but for the stability and adaptability of institutions, whether parliament, church, gallery or school, and Dr Di Monaco's book shows that the British independent schools have more than a colourful and controversial past; they continue to have a major part to play in the shape and quality of modern education.
