Author Bio
Brian Johnson Barker was born and educated in Cape Town. He ran a medical laboratory for 15 years before becoming a freelance writer/editor/researcher/photographer. From 1980 to 1996, Johnson Barker worked for Reader's Digest Books on titles ranging from South African history and travel to practical law and safety. He has written titles on South African travel, history and medical research, plus numerous magazine articles on history, genealogy, heraldry, aviation, numismatics and weapons. He is an honorary consultant to the South African Heritage Resources Agency, the South African Cultural History Museum and the Cape Town Castle Military Museum. He is married with two adult sons. Whitney Smith, PhD, is the director of the Flag Research Center in Winchester, Massachusetts. In 1962, he and a colleague founded The Flag Bulletin: The International Journal of Vexillology. Since then, Smith has served as a consultant to many governments, businesses and institutions and is the author of 24 books on flags.
