Media Reviews
This is a most pleasurable sporting book written with honesty and in a colloquial style. It covers the hardships and discipline of professional sport as well as the fleeting triumphs which all seek to achieve. Written in collaboration with David Brayley, it covers the twenty years of Tony Cotteys sporting life from a 16-year-old apprentice with Swansea City as their great days are ending in the mid eighties, to his mature years with Glamorgan CCC and the final six years with Sussex 19982004. Included are his brief forays into South African and Australian cricket and his (sledging) battle with the redoubtable Merv Hughes. At times, attempts at post-event wisdom and the uncertainties of professional sport intrude overmuch. The philosophical reflections of the later chapters would perhaps have carried the story forward with more certainty and with the positivity he likes to stress. An obviously crucial chapter 18 tells of his leaving Glamorgan in 1998 after 13 years with the Club. Ostensibly over a contractual dispute wanting 3 years not 2 and a place on the benefit list it seems that a little more diplomacy on either side would easily have resolved the problem. He claims a lack of backing from captain and senior professionals. His move to Sussex brought 4 years of under achievement but again a Sunday League 1999 trophy and a County Championship in 2003. As a Welshman he admits that in spirit they were his best team ever. Again, however, he had a dissatisfied departure. Duncan Fletcher and Peter Moores are praised for their coaching skills and we meet other sporting legends John Toshack, Viv Richards -- whom he encounters or played with. He sees cricket as a team game played by individuals, and has an interesting attitude to what he calls the immortality sought by sportsmen in the professional game. The division of a cricketers career into 3 stages is well illustrated with examples, including his own in the final chapter. The book is above all an entertaining and enjoyable read, anecdotal, insightful and a class above many ghost-written biographies of greater players.
