The weather is such an inconsistent feature of our lives that it has become a constant concern and talking point for everyone. Whenever we plan a trip or an event, we listen eagerly to the weatherman and for those who watch Wales Today on TV, Derek Brockway is the guru of weather. Over the years he has become an integral part of our lives. With a twinkle in his eye and a wave of those arms, he guides us through the vagaries of the weather for the next few days and is more often right than wrong. Derek Brockway has also moved into presenting other TV programmes, including walks and nature programmes and now he has produced this attractive hardback book which is partly his autobiography and partly an informative treatise on all aspects of the weather. It is intriguing to learn that Derek first became interested in the weather as a small child and never wavered in his enthusiasm for studying it, even on one occasion asking Jimll Fix It (unsuccessfully) to fix it for him to meet Jack Scott, the BBC weatherman. With endearing frankness he tells of his loving family, happy childhood and his mischievous behaviour as a child and admits that he has never totally lost that tendency. The story of his life as a weatherman is woven through the book, including a spell in the Falkland Islands, which whetted his appetite for travelling, and his metamorphosis into a well-known TV and radio personality. His enthusiasm for the weather also comes across in those chapters devoted to the history of meteorology and various aspects of the weather. It is interesting to read of the great snows, floods, and tornados which have struck Wales over the centuries, as well as the mythology which has surrounded the weather since ancient times. He includes a chapter on climate change which, while warning of the importance of rising to the challenge of climate change, is a fair representation of current thinking on the subject. He ends with light-hearted chapters on his leisure interests and the many ways in which he meets the viewing audience all over Wales. In addition, the book is lavishly illustrated with pictures of Derek and his family as well as spectacular pictures of different aspects of the weather. A lovely book. Author Bio
Derek Brockway works for the Met Office as a weather forecaster, preparing and presenting the lunchtime and nightly TV forecasts for BBC Wales Today and bulletins for BBC Radio Wales. He was born in Barry and after periods spent in London, Birmingham and the Falklands, he now lives in the village of Miskin near Cardiff. Famed for his energetic and enthusiastic style of presenting, Derek has also presented a TV program Derek's Welsh Weather and radio shows Derek's Lightning Guide to Weather and Weatherman Walking.
