Overcoming Loss: Activities and Stories to Help Transform Children's Grief and Loss

Overcoming Loss: Activities and Stories to Help Transform Children's Grief and Loss

by Julia Sorensen (Author)

Synopsis

Overcoming Loss is a photocopiable resource that addresses childrens' feeling of loss, which can arise from changing communities, schools, moving house, divorce or the death of a parent or grandparent. Children are limited to a vocabulary of broad emotions like 'happy', 'sad' and 'angry', and are often unable to articulate their grief in words. This can impair their long-term emotional development.

The activities in Overcoming Loss use the power of play and creative arts to give the grieving child the language to identify subtle feelings, such as shame, despair and jealousy. Designed to encourage social and emotional learning, these exercises employ play, art and story-telling to access the ways in which children naturally express their feelings, and offers opportunities for parents and professionals to direct the child towards understanding their emotions.

Parents, teachers, counsellors and anyone working with children between the ages of 4 and 8 who are dealing with a loss will find this resource a practical and effective tool.

Media Reviews
This book will prove to be an excellent resource for anyone who is helping children with grief through loss. -- Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS)
This book is both sensitively and creatively written for both parents and professionals who are in contact with children ages 4-8 and may be experiencing loss and grief for a number of reasons. The writer integrates a variety of approaches such as emotional literacy and CBT with the power of play, creative arts and storytelling and a wealth of photocopiable resources. It is divided into four sections and each conveys both ideas and information that are both meaningful and creative... I thoroughly recommend this book as a resource for counsellors working with children, it will not go into any in depth explanation about loss or complex grief but will be a useful companion to aid children as they move through the different stages of grief enabling it to be integrated into their life experience with support and understanding. -- Accord', the magazine of the Association of Christian Counsellors
