Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Phil has felt like an outsider as long as he can remember. All Phil has ever known about his father is that he was Number Three on his mother's list - third in a series of affairs that have set Phil's family even further apart from the critical townspeople across the river. As for his own sexuality, Phil doesn't care what the neighbours will think; he's just waiting for the right bloke to come along. Haunting, provocative, and sophisticated, this literary novel by award winner by Andreas Steinhofel has become a much acclaimed international success.

Media Reviews
With this masterful tale of sex, love and redemption, Andreas Steinhofel gathers up all preconceived notions of the crossover novel and smashes them to smithereens. It's as powerful, as quietly compelling, as a loaded gun. * Meg Rosoff, author of HOW I LIVE NOW *
One of the increasing number of crossover novels that punch full weight both in style and subject. -- Meg Rosoff * Guardian *
[Phil's] quietly contemplative portrayal of love, loneliness, hope and friendship is both lyrically written and beautifully translated. -- Kate Agnew * Guardian *
An exquisitely, subtly crafted and demanding work . . . wonderfully life-affirming. * Books for Keeps *
Sad and beautiful and hard to forget. * Carousel *
