Outsiders

Outsiders

by KevinCrossley-Holland (Author)

Synopsis

Six strange and haunting stories, set in isolated communities inland and by the sea, where insiders stick together, and outsiders - a girl outlawed for her illegitimate child, a wild man who walks out of the sea - are regarded with suspicion. Kevin Crossley-Holland has a genius for reinventing folk tales in a way that makes the characters real people, whose thoughts and feelings are our own. This little collection brings together some of his finest and most admired retellings, including the three best-known of all, 'The Green Children', 'Sea-Tongue' and 'The Wild Man'. Linked by ideas about exile and displacement, they make a thought-provoking book for our times, beautifully presented with line drawings by a notable artist.

The outsiders theme is highly relevant today and gives this new collection a high profile. 'The Green Children' and 'The Wildman' have had long lives as individual books and as librettos for operas performed by children. All the stories are already known in schools and are widely used by teachers. Christian Birmingham very well known as a picture book illustrator.

Media Reviews
'Sometimes beautiful, sometimes perplexing, these are as much for adults as for children. A few were written for performance: all benefit from being read aloud.' -- Will Cohu TELEGRAPH WEBSITE 'Crossley-Holland certainly writes with complete conviction and has produced an enthralling collection... his language and style echo the haunting tenor of the stories.' -- Mary McLaughlin INIS (IRELAND) 'the power of these tales lies in the way he places the reader squarely in the shoes of the outsiders. Quick mention must be made of Christian Birmingham's black and white drawings, capturing moments of expression or posture that vividly enhance the tales.' -- Huw Thomas TES 20.1.06
