Gospel in Esther

Gospel in Esther

by Michael Beckett (Author)

Synopsis

Christian tradition has long been hostile to the book of Esther. Believing the book lacked a specifically religious perspective, making no mention of God or of prayer, many of the church fathers regarded it as uncanonical. But is such a stance justified? Perhaps this short book of the Old Testament has more to say to us today than we would expect. In Gospel in Esther, the author challenges such longpervading attitudes. He presents an overtly Christian and typological reading of Esther, in which Esther herself is presented as a female exemplar of Christ. What would appear to be an entirely secular telling of a story of deliverance is shown to be a typological depiction of the universality of God's grace and the allsufficiency of the sacrifice of Jesus, in whom God has done all that is necessary to save humankind.
