Synopsis

A combination of grapes, cucumbers and carrots to cure heart disease? A soothing smoothie containing cherries, pineapples and lettuce to ease the aches of arthritis? A cocktail of apricots, prunes and parsley to soothe a sore throat? The restorative, healing qualities of natural fruits, vegetables, herbs and seeds are well documented, and they have been since as early as the 1920s. When, in 1927, South African Dr Johanna Brandt was told that she had cancer, she was determined to find a natural cure. After numerous experiments, she chanced upon a diet consisting primarily of grapes. Her subsequent cure led her to publish a book, The Grape Cure, that is still available, and widely used today. Also in the 1920s, German Dr Max Gerson claimed that many chronic illnesses are caused by an imbalance between potassium and sodium. Potassium-rich foods (fruits and vegetables) generate and activate white blood cells within the body - these are the cells that attack and destroy cancer and other illness-related cells. An excess of sodium within the body can lead to cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Gerson claimed that a healthy bodily balance between potassium and sodium should be 4:1. If you examine the ratios in a packet of Corn Flakes, the potassium:sodium ratio is 1:9.6. Because of our complex modern diet, only 10 percent of what we eat ever finds its way to the trillions of cells that are in charge of our health. Juices are a fast and easy way to get the vital nourishment we need to help prevent and fight disease.
