The Official Liverpool FC Illustrated History

Synopsis

If it weren't for one man, Liverpool Football Club would never have been born. When Everton left Anfield in a dispute over rent in 1892, club Chairman John Houlding stayed behind - along with a handful of supporters and just three first-team players. But he was determined to see football continue at the ground. He formed a new club from scratch, chose the name Liverpool...and created a legend. Even John Houlding couldn't have predicted how successful it would become. More than 100 years on, no English club can match the Liverpool FC roll of honour: League champions 18 times, FA Cup winners six times, League Cup winners six times, European Cup winners four times and UEFA Cup winners three times. The Official Liverpool FC Illustrated History charts the rise and rise of the Reds to the very summit of the English game, from the struggles of the early years through to Gerard Houllier's record-breaking treble in 2001 and beyond. It tells the story of a club that is rich in tradition: the famous Boot Room ethic that has permeated through every corridor of Anfield; plus the awesome support offered by the Kop - still a hotbed of fanaticism despite its modernisation into an all-seater stand. It recalls the deeds of legendary managers like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, and salutes the achievements of today's inspirational boss, Gerard Houllier. It also celebrates the litany of players whose names are etched in folklore: from Liddell to Hunt and Keegan; through Dalglish, Hansen and Souness; to the present young guns, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen. Featuring three never-before-published photo archives, this is a fascinating journey through a century of sporting heroics, incorporating both incredible victories and tearful failures. It is a story rich with incident: from the triumphs of Rome and Paris, to the tragedies of Heysel and Hillsbrough. Most of all, it is a story of incredible passion and pride. For Liverpool Football Club somehow manages to inspire not only its own fans, but football followers the world over. To millions, Liverpool FC is an extremely special club - and this is its incredibly special story.
