Ayurveda: The Right Way to Live - The Ancient Indian Medical System, Focusing on the Prevention of Disease Through Diet, Lifestyle and Herbalism

by Gopi Warrier (Author)

Synopsis

Ayurveda is the oldest complete medical system in the world, the origins of which can be traced back 4,000 years to the Vedic civilization of India. Ayurvedic medicine is based on the principle that each individual has a unique constitution which is determined by the balance of three vital energies in the body - the three Doshas, known by their Sanskrit names of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. All foods and lifestyles have an effect on the overall balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and disease is understood as an imbalance of these respective Doshas. Every person must be treated individually and the skill of the practitioner lies in assessing a person's constitution, diagnosing the imbalanced Doshas and deciding upon the best possible treatment to return the Doshas to harmonious balance. Ayurveda: The Right Way to Live is a comprehensive, accessible guide to Ayurvedic diets and lifestyles, based on the constitution of body and mind, and Ayurvedic treatments, which consist of four basic forms: panchakarma (the five detoxification procedures), medicine or drug therapy, dietary regime and the regulation of lifestyle. Ayurveda is a holistic practice and emphasis is placed on its preventive aspect with the inclusion of allied therapies such as yoga, rejuvenation and virillfication. Ayurveda: The Right Way to Live also provides an in-depth analysis of body/mind types and Ayurvedic cures for common diseases like Gastritis, Indigestion, Constipation, Bronchitis, Asthma, Enlargement of the Prostrate, Cystitis, Arthritis, Psoriasis, Alopecia and Eczema.
