Media Reviews
Anyone looking for a book on flowering plants for the garden will find this a useful reference. Albeit omitting the vast range of flowering shrubs, trees and climbers, the subjects it does focus on - perennials, annuals, bulbs, alpines and roses - include many choice plants often omitted in similar publications. Rosa Veilchenblau for instance, its delicate violet flowers providing at least a month of scent and colour is suggested while the diminutive ramondas in the alpine section are also often overlooked as being as difficult. The inclusion of pelargoniums in the perennial section could be misleading as could Hippeastrum in the bulb section but overall the information provided for each plant is useful and pertinent, whilst the recommended plant list the book concludes on is a valuable quick reference guide. A long way from the definitive Royal Horticultural Society guides, it is nevertheless, at the price, a colourful work for all gardeners looking to add to or extend their floral borders. - Lucy Watson
