Never Too Old to Grow: Readings for Carers

Never Too Old to Grow: Readings for Carers

by Alexine Crawford (Author), Bishop Christopher Herbert (Foreword)

Synopsis

Behind the practicalities of caring for people who have reached the dependent "Fourth Age" lie stories of inner development and growth. Alexine Crawford witnessed such changes in herself, in her family, and in her mother whose senile dementia propelled her into the role of carer. Talking with friends in comparable circumstances widened her insights as she heard their stories. Struck by how Bible characters had very much the same inner problems and conflicts as ourselves, she brings them alive, relating them to our own attitudes and situations today. This book is aimed at anybody involved in caring work, particularly with their own parents; those with pastoral oversight of older people; and those seeking insights into how family relationships can continue to develop far beyond the childhood years. It contains 42 Bible-based readings, with passages drawn from Old and New Testament and linked to different aspects of the caring relationship. Both practical and spiritual issues are covered and topics include: honour, being old, family stress, forgiveness, what about me?, personhood, what "good dying" means.
