by Garth Hewitt (Author), Garth Hewitt (Author), Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal (Preface)
As eyes turn to Bethelehem at the millennium, we remember the birth of Jesus in a stable and the haunting promise of peace from the angels. This book follows the pattern of Advent to Christmas - indeed the three Christmases celebrated in the Holy Land, with the Greek Orthodox celebrations falling on 6 January and the Armenian on 19 January. Then to the New Year and on to the Epiphany, lighting candles as we go and trying to find the way that brings light and that brings hope - particularly in the places of our world currently in darkness, suffering pain, and which are the victims of oppression and injustice. The journey takes us through Old Testament stories that revolve around Bethlehem and this area of Palestine, and then on to encounter the bursting of light into the darkness at Bethlehem in the Gospel story. With Bible readings, reflections and prayers for each day, we travel with Garth himself, visiting the people and the places of the Holy Land, hearing their stories and finding hope amid the struggles. This book encourages us to make the journey into the new millennium through Bethlehem.
