ILL DIRECTORY OF NATIVE AMERICANS (Illustrated Directory)

ILL DIRECTORY OF NATIVE AMERICANS (Illustrated Directory)

by Colin F. Taylor (Author), William C. Sturtevant (Author)

Synopsis

This superbly illustrated book looks back at the way of life of the first Americans, using almost 40 detailed photographs of over 1,000 tribal artefacts, plus fascinating contemporary photographs taken from 1850 to 1940, to highlight how some of the Native Americans adapted to living in widely varying environments, from the Arctic to the Southwest of America. It is divided into nine cultural areas, and describes the beliefs, the key individuals and historical events in the lives of the most notable tribes and groups of Indians - including famous names such as the Apache, Cheyenne, Seminole, Cherokee, Blackfeet, Crow, Pawnee and many more. The book lets the readers into their homes, describes their religious beliefs and customs, their warrior-like ways, and the manner in which, with the coming of the white settlers, the old Indian way of life was swept away forever.
