He was widely regarded as a giant among church leaders and the voice of Christianity in Scotland. This was fully underlined in November 1994 when an estimated 5,000 people from all over Scotland made their way to Rome to pay tribute to the one-time Scottish parish priest who became only the third Scottish cardinal in history.
