Synopsis

One of the founder members of the Football League, the early history of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC was relatively undistinguished. After beating Everton in the FA Cup final of 1893, Wolverhampton Wanderers went on to claim the trophy on four occasions, with further victories in 1908, 1949 and 1960. After finishing as runners-up in the League in 1937-8 and 1938-9, the club won the championship three times in the space of six seasons in 1953-4, 1957-8 and 1958-9, and were considered the most powerful side in the land. After reaching the final of the UEFA Cup in 1972, the club won the League Cup in 1974 and 1980 and the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1988. As well as League and Cup honours, Molineaux has been home to some of the game's most talented players - men like Stan Cullis, who also managed the club, Billy Wright, Ron Flowers, Peter Broadbent and John Richards. Covering everything from the players to the managers from Molineaux to the Cup, this encyclopaedia is a guide to the Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club.
