Media Reviews
This jolly adventure story about the close relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter is appealing in many ways. Betsi Wyn and her Mam-gu live together and they just love getting out Mam-gus ancient campervan, Heulwen, and going on trips. As it is the first day of the holidays after the rain has stopped, its the perfect time for going on a road trip with Heulwen and a picnic. Heulwen seems a bit reluctant to come out of her garage after her winter rest, but they finally get her started, and off they go. Its a lovely day that includes a visit to a Medieval Fayre in a castle, encounters with archery, some really terrible soup, and a troop of knights in shining armour who must push-start Heulwen, who really has refused to go this time. There are lots of Welsh words interspersed in the text, and the meaning is always made clear in the context an excellent way of learning some Welsh painlessly. Full-page black and white pictures add greatly to the fun, and the short chapters and largish print will appeal to newly confident readers. An excellent choice for schools and for visitors to Wales who will enjoy the Welsh context.
