Synopsis

Meet Ronel Morgan. She had a high-powered job in advertising in Johannesburg, flash car and fabulous lifestyle. So why is she catching the tube in London, penniless and desperate for a temp typing job? What makes someone give everything up and flee to a different country? And what is she running away from? Meet Ronel's family. When her capricious and critical mother abandons her daughters to marry a wealthy sugar baron, Ronel's friends and family gather to pick up the pieces. Ronel's first love is revealed: David, a young, Jewish student activist. Rocked by the political tumult of South Africa in the early 1990's, the legacy of their love affair leaves an indelible mark on both their histories. We learn of her meteoric rise through the advertising industry in a world where wheeling and dealing, adultery and multimillion-rand deals take their toll. And, finally, we discover her guilty secret. As Ronel slowly builds a life for herself in London, we see her come to terms with the damage she has caused and begin to make amends to the people she has let down and, in the process, to make peace with her past.
