Northern Knits Gifts: Thoughtful Projects Inspired by Folk Traditions

Northern Knits Gifts: Thoughtful Projects Inspired by Folk Traditions

by Lucinda Guy (Author)

Synopsis

Lucinda Guy continues her exploration of folk-knitting traditions in this colorful volume of small projects and accessories. Looking to the traditional knitting techniques of Scandinavia, Estonia, Iceland, and the Faroe and Shetland islands, she offers modern interpretations of such heritage techniques as twined knitting, two-color knitting, lace techniques, damask, fair isle, embroidery, and rya (knotted knitting similar to shag carpet).
The projects in the book embrace the Danish notion of hygge- taking pleasure in comforting and cozy things, and often associated with family and close friends. The 20 projects include mittens, socks, hats, scarves, and bags, and are perfect for wearing and gifting. Emphasizing pattern and color, these knitted designs also embody the Scandinavian aesthetic of making utilitarian objects beautiful as well as useful. Additionally, the book celebrates the specific wools traditionally used in each project and provides thumbnail sketches of the history and folk culture surrounding each technique.

Issue 52

Inspired by the knitting traditions of Scandinavia, the Baltics and the Northern Isles, Lucinda Guy brings us a colourful collection of warming accessories for family and home. Each pattern is accompanied by details of the knitting heritage of the country from which it originates. Many traditional techniques are covered, including twined and stranded knitting, as well as embroidery. French knots, nupps, and fringes add texture and interest to a number of the patterns. We love the charming cockerel doorstop inspired by the Faroe Islands, and the fantastic child's sweater and hat with its stylised Finnish motifs knitted in cheerful shades. The photography shows each piece from multiple angles, which is always helpful, and the patterns are clearly laid out, with the bulk of them relying mostly on charts due to the prevalence of colourwork.
