Ingrid: Ingrid Bergman, a Personal Biography (Applause Books)

Ingrid: Ingrid Bergman, a Personal Biography (Applause Books)

by Charlotte Chandler (Author)

Synopsis

The first time in paperback, this book is a personal biography of the beloved star of Casablanca. Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982) was perhaps best known for her roles in Casablanca and Notorious, but she won three Oscars for Gaslight, Anastasia, and Murder on the Orient Express, and was a seven-time nominee. She also won two Emmy Awards and a Tony. In 1949, though married and a mother, she fell in love with director Roberto Rossellini and conceived a child with him. Her fans were shocked and she was denounced on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Chandler interviewed Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Cary Grant, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, and Gregory Peck for the book, which contains synopses of all her films, including the Swedish ones.

Media Reviews
Ingrid Bergman remains one of cinema's greatest stars. Charlotte Chandler's 'personal biography' offers us a window into the remarkable life of a remarkable woman.

-- John Landis

Once again Charlotte Chandler opens the door to the personal life of an iconic movie star. I was bewitched by Chandler's book, almost as much as I was by Bergman herself.

-- David Brown

I can never forget Roberto Rossellini or the grace of Ingrid Bergman. Evviva Ingrid, this new book of Charlotte Chandler, for bringing their spirit back to life.

-- Michelangelo Antonioni

I live next door to Ingrid Bergman's old Benedict Canyon house. I've never seen her ghost, but she beautifully haunts Charlotte Chandler's Ingrid. On every page, Ingrid says 'Boo!'

-- Arthur Hiller

Reading Ingrid, I found myself crying tears of sadness and joy. On the pages of this book, Charlotte Chandler portrays my parents as the beautiful people they were and still are.

-- Isabella Rossellini

Ingrid Bergman. What images just the name evokes! But behind the icon on the screen and the scandal in the headlines was a real, flesh-and-blood woman all of us would have liked to know. Meet her now in Charlotte Chandler's Ingrid, a biography more exciting and dramatic than most novels.

-- Sidney Sheldon
