Achieving DevOps: A Novel About Delivering the Best of Agile, DevOps, and Microservices

by Dave Harrison (Author), Dave Harrison (Author), Knox Lively (Contributor)

Synopsis

Bridge the gap between vision and implementation of DevOps practices in corporate environments. This book follows the story of Ben, a development lead beset by problems at work. Step by step, we see Ben build the momentum needed to create positive changes within his company in its adoption of Agile, DevOps, and microservices architecture by thinking less about outcomes and more about building positive habits.
Most of us face a Now what? moment early on in our DevOps journey. We're excited about the possibilities with DevOps to cut through artificial restraints, eliminate waste, speed up our development life cycle, and improve our lead time in delivering value faster and with higher quality. But we're often at a loss as to where to start after attending an offsite workshop or reading a book. There seems to be so much to do and we don't have the power to change everything.
We need to know how to effect change in an organization from the bottom up, build support, and learn a pattern of progressively building on success. These are the challenges surrounding DevOps, and this book shows you how to navigate the political waters, build management support, show measurable results, and bring DevOps successfully into an organization.

What You'll Learn

  • Avoid the six DevOps anti-patterns-the common pitfalls that can trip up an implementation
  • Apply metrics to avoid ambiguity and tap into the executive level commitment needed for sustained success
  • Harness key contributors for success in building out your road map in a phased, low-risk approach
  • Support your DevOps effort by implementing a microservices architecture
  • Make Conway's Law and the structure of your organization work in your favor rather than against you
  • Benefit from those who have been there through case studies and interviews with key thought leaders from Microsoft, Google, Etsy, Puppet, Raygun, TicketMaster, Humana, Chef, and others illuminating the way

Author Bio
Dave Harrison is Senior Application Development Manager and works for Microsoft Premier. As a development lead and project manager, he has spearheaded cultural revolutions in several large retail and insurance organizations making the leap to agile development and continuous delivery. Dave is an enthusiastic promoter of release management using tools such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible, and Docker. He believes very firmly that, as with agile development, the exact tool selected is less important than having the people and processes in place and ready. On a personal note, he is the proud father of two beautiful girls and has been married to his lovely wife Jennifer for 23 years, and is based out of Portland, Oregon, USA. He enjoys fishing, reading history books, and in his spare time often wonders if he should be doing more around the house versus goofing off.
