Death in the Rainy Season (Commandant Serge Morel)

Death in the Rainy Season (Commandant Serge Morel)

by Anna Jaquiery (Author)

Synopsis

Phnom Penh, Cambodia; the rainy season. When a French man, Hugo Quercy, is found brutally murdered, Commandant Serge Morel finds his holiday drawn to an abrupt halt. Quercy - dynamic, well-connected - was the magnetic head of a humanitarian organisation which looked after the area's neglected youth.
Opening his investigation, the Parisian detective soon finds himself buried in one of his most challenging cases yet. Morel must navigate this complex and politically sensitive crime in a country with few forensic resources, and armed with little more than a series of perplexing questions: what was Quercy doing in a hotel room under a false name? What is the significance of his recent investigations into land grabs in the area? And who could have broken into his home the night of the murder?
Becoming increasingly drawn into Quercy's circle of family and friends - his adoring widow, his devoted friends and bereft colleagues - Commandant Morel will soon discover that in this lush land of great beauty and immense darkness, nothing is quite as it seems . . .
A deeply atmospheric crime novel that bristles with truth and deception, secrets and lies: Death in the Rainy Season is a compelling mystery that unravels an exquisitely wrought human tragedy.

Media Reviews
Even more compelling than her impressive debut The Lying Down Room . . . Cambodia is evoked with stunning delicacy, humidity seems to pour from every page and the engaging Morel is emerging as a detective the great Aurelio Zen would admire . . . Jaquiery may just be on her way to assuming the mantle of the much-missed Michael Dibdin * Daily Mail *
Another beautifully written crime novel with a decidedly intriguing main protagonist at the heart of it all . . . . There are a lot of things to love about this story - not the least of which is the absolutely evocative sense of place Anna Jaquiery brings to her stories . . . There are some beautifully drawn characters, the mystery itself is intelligent and evocative . . . Overall then a most terrific read. Definitely highly recommended for fans of literary crime stories. * LizLovesBooks *
One of my most eagerly anticipated reads this year . . . I thoroughly enjoyed being reunited with Morel having loved Book 1 - The Lying-Down Room . . . One of the things I appreciate most about the author's writing style is the way she slowly builds up background and atmosphere with all the characters and weaves them into an intricate plot. This makes her books irresistible and addictive (this is me trying to avoid the word unputdownable) . . . I know I won't be the only reader impatiently awaiting the next instalment. * TraceyBookLover *
Well written with an intelligent plot and cleverly drawn characters, this gripping thriller will not only keep you guessing but has a suitably surprising and intriguing ending. * Book of the Month, Candis *
With lush, evocative prose, complex characters and an enigmatic detective you just can't resist Death In The Rainy seasons is a perfect summer read. * Eva Dolan *
The plot is pleasantly uncluttered, and Jaquiery is impressive in portraying a country trying hard, but finding it difficult, to escape the legacy of its bloody past. * The Times *
A neat and conventional murder mystery, rendered fascinating by its vivid description of life in contemporary Phnom Penh. * Literary Review *
The story is told from multiple points of view, including that of the killer and those involved in the crime, resulting in a view of Quercy as both hero and villain. With a fine sense of place, some excellent characters and complex plotting, this is a beautifully crafted crime novel and compelling read. * Choice *
Jaquiery's haunting debut The Lying Down Room was a joy to read and review, so much so that it was second in my Top Read of 2014, and is one of the books that I most consistently recommend in my day job as a bookseller, when people are looking for a new slice of Euro crime . . . Death In The Rainy Season contains so many aspects of human interest, emotion, and intrigue along the way. Not only is it an intelligent and compelling tale of murder and corruption, but the quality of the writing and the evocation of its setting and characters make it a rich, multi-layered and totally rewarding piece of crime fiction. I am singularly impressed once again, as I was with The Lying Down Room, and have no hesitation in wholly recommending this one too * Raven Crime Reads *
The whole book is perfectly paced - totally impossible to put down - and the writing is quite beautiful. I'm an unashamed fan of Anna Jaquiery and her writing - this book is even better than her first, and I'm looking forward already to whatever comes next * Being Anne *
A beautifully crafted story full of layers which we have to peel away to discover exactly what has happened and who the murderer is. With beautifully formed characters which and are both fascinating and intelligent you really cannot go wrong. This book certainly gives some insight in to some of the darker and seedier aspects of life, giving us an insight both in to life in France and Cambodia; making for a truly fascinating and compelling read' * Compelling Reads *
This extremely gripping second crime novel by this new author is very well plotted and very atmospheric . . . The Lying-Down Room, her lauded debut novel, was the first in a series to feature Commandant Serge Morel. Death in the Rainy Season is her second novel. She writes her beautiful novel in a literary and very atmospheric style with very detailed descriptions that really capture what she is describing exactly in one's minds eye. I absolutely loved reading this story which I recommend extremely highly. * Eurocrime *
Concentrating on the relationships between variously troubled characters in a fascinating ex-pat setting, this mystery novel also gives an atmospheric picture of modern Cambodia. * Morning Star *
