RAF Air-to-Air Refuelling: A Pictorial History

RAF Air-to-Air Refuelling: A Pictorial History

by KeithWilson (Author), Keith Wilson (Author)

Synopsis

Some of the earliest experiments in in-flight refuelling took place in 1923, using a hose to transfer fuel from a hand-held fuel tank on one aircraft to the usual fuel filler of the second. However, the first practical in-flight refuelling system was not demonstrated until 1935, by Alan Cobham's Flight Refuelling Ltd. Known as the grappled-line looped-hose system, it was intended to be used to refuel heavy bombers in the Far East during the Second World War but the war ended before it could be used. After the war, Flight Refuelling Ltd would go on to develop the probe and drogue system still used for in-flight refuelling today by the RAF as well as the US Navy, US Marines, most Western European military aircraft and Russian military aircraft as well. In this book, noted aviation expert and in-flight photographer Keith Wilson explores the history and development of in-flight refuelling, one of the most delicate processes a pilot can undertake.

Author Bio
Keith Wilson has been involved in aviation publishing for more than 30 years and is probably best known for his striking air-to-air images in Pilot magazine. He has more than 1,500 air-to-air sorties under his belt, shooting almost 2,000 different aircraft in the process. He has photographed a very broad range of subjects, from gliders, vintage and veteran, aerobatics and general aviation right through high-altitude research aircraft, biz jets, commercial jets and military fast jets. During this time he has amassed a photographic library of around 300,000 images. He has worked for a number of well-known aviation companies across Europe and flying is also his hobby. He obtained a Private Pilots Licence back in 1981 and continues to fly at every opportunity.
