In 1888, Englands Football league came into being and ever since a player has been recognised each year for the highest number of goals scored in the league, First Division or Premier League. The first was John Goodall of Preston North End, with 21 goals, the most recent, Didier Drogba, with 29. The Football leagues top scorer was Dixie Dean of Everton, in 1927/28, with an impressive tally of 60 goals.

Mark Metcalf is a well-known and prolific sports writer with a speciality in pre-first world war football. He has written widely as a journalist, and is the author of many football books for Amberley. He lives in West Yorkshire. Tony Matthews is a former semi-professional footballer, sports master and, since 1975, has written over 100 books on football, covering 25+ clubs. He was the WBA statistician/historian for 30 years up to 2003. He lives in Spain.
